Vilamoura at a glance

Close to the beach and set against a backdrop of lush pine forests, Vilamoura is a popular choice for a villa holiday in the sun. It is one of the largest self contained resort areas in Europe and has the facilities that can be expected for a resort of its size. These include tennis, horse riding, water sports, clay pigeon shooting, lawn bowling, sailing and deep sea fishing. Nightlife centres around the large lively marina, which forms the focal point of the resort. Shops, bars and restaurants overlook luxury yachts, and there is a cinema, and a casino if you fancy a flutter.

Vilamoura also has six different golf courses to choose from offering every type of challenge to every standard of player. International tournaments are hosted here on the glorious 18-hole championship courses. Most of our villas in Vilamoura nestle in the lush gardens between these courses and some have glorious views of the fairways.

Vilamoura has excellent shopping and has a good selection of designer boutiques, shoe stores, sports outlets, perfumeries, jewelers to mention a few. Those wanting to experience a little local colour can visit the Saturday market at nearby Loule for traditional handicrafts or fresh produce.

Alongside all these excellent holiday activities, Vilamoura has one of the finest white sandy beaches in the area, and is close to countless others. This resort has something to keep everyone entertained on their villa holiday in the Algarve.

Villas to Go recommended local beaches near Vilamoura…

  • Vilamoura and Falesia - Very long stretch of sand backed by cliffs at the Falesia end, running from Vilamoura marina to the fishing village of Olhos D’Agua. Warm waters with good water sports facilities and lifeguard at the Vilamoura end. There are also several good restaurants overlooking the marina.
  • Quinta do Lago & Vale do Lobo - Nicknamed ‘Gigi’ beach, a well kept 3km stretch of sandy beach with dunes behind and fringed with pine trees, bars and restaurants. Good surfing conditions.
  • Quarteira - A long beach, backed by a promenade with shops, restaurants and bars. At the far west side is a pier, which forms the harbour in Vilamoura. Near the town the beach is narrow and has breakwaters, which calm the sea. Good swimming; flag and lifeguard in season. Good for children. Leisure equipment is available for hire.

  • Pinhal – Set back from the tourist area, this course winds through a pine forest. The outward nine wander through holiday villas, whereas the back nine have a more open feel.
  • Laguna – An 18 hole course where the fairways are open with few trees but there are many water hazards and well placed bunkers. Occasional strong winds make for interesting rounds.
  • Millennium – This 18 hole course wanders through a parkland of pine trees, and has few tricky shots, but watch out for the lake alongside the 6th, waiting for stray balls.
  • Victoria Clube de Golfe – Newly opened, the longest 18 holes in Portugal, challenging to players of all standards.
  • Vila Sol – Another English design in keeping with the natural terrain of the area. The outward nine will test your skills.
  • Old Course – Set in a beautiful landscape, this is the second oldest course in the Algarve. From the English school of design, the 4th has Hole in One potential.

    • Take time to go…

  • Make the most of the great outdoors and take a walk in the Rio Formosa National park and see some of the regional birds which nest there.
  • Visit your local market and choose from fresh local produce or explore the pottery shops along the N125, and take home some hand painted ceramics.
  • Explore historic Faro, and visit the Bishops Palace or Renaissance-style cathedral. Take in Carmo Church where chapel walls are decorated with bones, or discover the Roman ruins of Estoi at the Archaeological museum. Finish the day in a restaurant hiding in a tree-lined street and enjoy the ambience of this tranquil old town.
  • Take a deep-sea fishing trip and try your hand at catching big fish such as marlin, swordfish, tuna and corvine. Tours operate out of the marina.
  • For a different type of boat trip, take a tour along the coast and have a barbeque on the beach, or charter a yacht for a more exclusive way to tour.
  • Spend an evening at the Casino, take in a dinner show and have a flutter – remember your passport, they won’t let you gamble without it!
